Greedy Domainer Slime

Over on the Nanog mailing list , IETF regular Randy Bush, known as much for his extreme language and hot temper as his technical acumen and support for the Internet in the developing world, asks voting members of Nominet to help keep "the greedy domainer slime" off the Nominet Board of Directors.

"Greedy domainer slime" is obviously supposed to tell you something important about motives, but it doesn't. The back story is much more complicated.

The Poop on Poop Names

If you understand this story, I need you to post some comments because what I'm about to write describes a phenomenon that I find utterly mystifying. Here's some background. Once upon a very long time ago, I wrote a small article on my icann.blog about "Z" domain names, describing how strings of Zs were registered as domain names from Z.com out into virtual ZZZZZZZZZZ.com infinity. (If I could find the article, buried somewhere in the archives of the Internet, I'd link it, but I can't.) which got me thinking about the strange sorts of domains you can find out there in the world. Like those I'm writing about today.

Now, forget for a minute how I learned about "poop" names, but let's just say, the poop on poop names is very strange indeed....

Proceed with Extreme Caution

Of all the domainer blogs in the blogosphere, the one at the top of the heap is Frank Schilling's "Seven Mile." It's always timely, well-written, with some of the best insights in the industry into what is happening with domain names and the service companies that surround them. Frank Schilling is back from vacation, and if you haven't followed his blog before, now is great time to catch up. I'll admit too that one of the reasons I find the Seven Mile blog so attractive is knowing that its author has made his fortune on domain names. Knowing the business success behind the author makes the blog sexier. Wouldn't you rather take your investment advice from a Warren Buffett blog than from an unknown blogger?

The optimism that Seven Mile and other domainer blogs show about the domain name market, however, is making me uneasy. And I'm afraid it's going to lead to some very sad stories down the road....
